Professional Development at the Center for Architecture

Continuing Education (CES)

The AIA New York Chapter offers over 100 courses and lectures annually for AIA CES credit, making the Center for Architecture the resource for continuing education for architects in New York City. Most CES events held at the Center are FREE to AIA members.

To view upcoming CES events, please visit the AIA NY's online Calendar.

For more information about AIA CES requirements, visit our Continuing Education page.

The chapter has now also launched a partnership with aecKnowledge for high quality online continuing education courses with thought leaders from around the nation.

In addition to continuing education for architects, the AIA New York Chapter also provides many specialized education programs and resources. These include ARE Test Prep courses, LEED Training, and advanced CES seminars. These are posted on the online Calendar as they become available.

To become a Registered Architect a professional undergraduate or graduate degree is not sufficient. Individuals must also complete Architectural Experience Program requirements and pass the Architect Registration Exam (ARE). The Chapter helps its members to meet these requirements in a variety of ways.

Visit the New York State Office of the Professions website for information about the process and for forms. If you are seeking a license in another state, visit the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards at for links to the appropriate organization.

ARE Review Classes are available in eight-session Winter/Spring and Fall Series.  Additional intensive and summer programs also availalbe. Visit the ARE Prep page (see tab above)  for details.

The New York Chapter has some study materials available for Associate Members to borrow while studying for the exam. Click the licensing tab above for further details.

The Architectural Experience Program (AXP) is a required step in the road to licensure. For regular updates on important exam preparation, visit NCARB’s website and newsletters.

Candidates should be aware that as of November 1, 2016 NCARB has begun to offer ARE 5.0. Those who are new to testing, will test in 5.0. Those who ahve begun under ARE 4.0 should become familiar with ARE 5.0 and how it differs in order to decide if they will complete 4.0 exams or transition to 5.0.

The AIA National website has extensive information and links for those who are working toward licensure.

Finally, watch for and join us for licensure, ARE and AXP related events on the AIA New York Chapter web site calendar.

In addition to regular CES programs and Licensing programs, the AIA New York Chapter offers training courses to help our members stay up-to-date on technology and professional skills and certifications.
